Eaten across a large area including southeast Europe and the Middle East, tzatziki is a very versatile yogurt dish that can be served as a sauce, soup, dip, or dressing. Despite regional variants on the name and ingredients, nearly all include two main ingredients: yogurt and cucumbers. This version also includes dill—giving it an immediately recognizable flavor and aroma—along with lemon, salt, and pepper.
This cucumber-dill yogurt sauce is excellent served as a side for Mediterranean meat dishes, such as Kofta or gyros. If you’ve ever been to a Greek American restaurant, you may have already eaten tzatziki loaded onto a gyros pita. It can also be part of a healthy snack or appetizer as a dip for fresh vegetable sticks.
As with other sauces (or most dishes), tzatziki tastes so good freshly homemade. The key to making a rich, creamy tzatziki sauce is using rich, creamy yogurt. It might sound obvious, but using whole milk, full-fat Greek yogurt will yield the creamiest yogurt sauce. Also, using fresh dill is important, as opposed to using dried herbs. Fresh dill will deliver the powerful aroma needed to say, TZATZIKI!, with every spoonful.
Making tzatziki is super easy; there is no cooking involved and it literally takes less than 5 minutes to make! This tzatziki is naturally vegetarian and gluten-free. Scroll down to see how you can make this delicious sauce at home.

Ingredients

- 1 cup Whole milk Greek yogurt, plain
- 3 Tbsp Dill, fresh
- 1/4 cup Cucumber, small diced
- 1/2 Lemon, or 2 Tbsp Lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1/2 tsp Pepper
Instructions

The first step in making tzatziki is small dicing the cucumber. Peel the cucumber and dice it into 1/4 inch cubes. Next, chop 3 Tbsp fresh dill.
In a small bowl, add 1 cup yogurt. I used whole milk Greek yogurt as it yields the creamiest tzatziki with higher fat content. However, you can certainly use 2% or even fat-free plain Greek yogurt instead.
To the yogurt, add 3 Tbsp chopped dill, 1/4 cup diced cucumber, juice of 1/2 lemon or 2 Tbsp lemon juice, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/2 tsp pepper. Gently stir to mix all the ingredients.
The cucumber dill yogurt sauce is ready to be served on or in or dipped into by your main dish!
