Korean Sweet and Savory Meatballs

These Korean-inspired meatballs are baked in an oven and tossed in a sweet soy sauce glaze. They are perfect as an appetizer or a meal.

Ingredients

Meatballs

  • 1.5 lb ground beef
  • ½ cup bread crumbs Panko
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp ginger grated
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 yellow onion small
  • 1 scallion
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • ½ tbsp pepper

Glaze

  • ¾ cup dark brown sugar
  • cup soy sauce
  • ½ tsp ginger powder
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tbsp corn starch

Topping (optional)

  • ¼ cup chopped scallion
  • 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds

Instructions

Meatballs

  • Puree or finely chop onion, scallion, garlic, and ginger.
  • Add all the meatball ingredients in a large bowl and mix.
  • Form 1½ inch balls and place them on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
  • Bake at 400° F for 25–28 minutes

Glaze

  • Add all the glaze ingredients in a sauce pan.
  • Boil over medium-low heat while constantly stirring.
  • Remove from heat once the glaze starts to bubble.

Combine

  • Gently toss meatballs with glaze to cover.
  • Optionally, top with chopped scallions and toasted sesame seeds.

Notes

  • While the meatballs made from scratch add more flavor and Korean identity, in a pinch, you can use frozen meatballs as an alternative.
