This is no ordinary burger! Between the bun is a traditional Korean patty that would ordinarily be served with white rice. Cooked in a Korean sweet and savory sauce, I thought it would be a fun and flavorful fusion mash-up to instead serve up these patties as “bulgogi” burgers. There are a few key differences from other burgers with which you might be more familiar.
One difference is the ingredients in the patty. This patty is loaded with mix-ins that are packed with Korean flavors. Since these bulgogi patties are already seasoned with scallions, soy sauce, ginger, and other flavors, these burgers do not require many other toppings. Just a few fresh vegetables, such as shredded cabbage or lettuce, sliced tomatoes and onions are all you need to enjoy them.
A second difference is that these patties should always be pan-cooked. Cooking them in a pan allows the patties to soak in the sweet, savory bulgogi sauce and absorb all the wonderful flavor as the sauce boils down. The sauce would just drip through a grill, so it is best to keep them on the stovetop.

Ingredients

- 2 1/2 lb Ground beef
- 1/4 cup Soy sauce
- 5 cloves Garlic
- 1 Pear
- 3 Tbsp Scallions
- 1/4 cup Brown sugar
- 1 Tbsp Sesame oil
- 1.5 Tbsp Grated ginger
- Burger buns
- Shredded cabbage or lettuce
Instructions
The first step in making the bulgogi burger is making the bulgogi sauce. Blend together garlic cloves, pear (peeled and cored), and scallions in a blender or a food processor. You can alternatively finely chop them with a knife. The pear serves two functions here: it is a natural sweetener and it also tenderizes the meat.
In a large mixing bowl, add ground beef and the blended garlic, pear, and scallion sauce. Also add grated ginger, soy sauce, brown sugar, and sesame oil. Mix all the ingredients to combine and form patties that are about 5 inches in diameter and 3/4 inch thick.

Cook over medium low heat in a large skillet. You may need to use two skillets to fit all the patties if you wish to cook them all at once. Cook for 12 minutes, flip, then cook for 12 additional minutes, until the patties are cooked through and the sauce is boiled down.

Serve the bulgogi burger patties on a burger bun with shredded cabbage or lettuce. It is also equally delicious to enjoy these bulgogi burger patties in their traditional presentation with a side of rice and vegetables.

- Cook the patties in skillets over medium-low heat. Cook for 12 minutes on each side, until the patties are cooked through and the sauce has boiled down.
- Serve on burger buns with vegetable toppings, such as shredded cabbage, lettuce, tomatoes, and onion. Alternatively, serve with cooked rice and vegetables on the side.
