Perfect Salisbury Steak

Jump to Recipe

Salisbury steak is a classic comfort food with soft, moist beef patties in brown mushroom gravy. Although it is called “steak,” it is actually made from ground beef formed into patties of a similar texture and flavor to meatloaf. One feature that sets Salisbury steak apart from meatloaf is the gravy. A delightfully tangy, sweet mushroom gravy adds a powerful flavor boost to the beef patties.

You can serve Salisbury steak with a side of mashed potatoes or rice, as well as some vegetables for a complete meal. This easy yet delicious recipe takes only 30 minutes to cook, making it a perfect meal for a busy weeknight dinner. Whenever I make this recipe, I can count on all four of my tasters to clean their plates. So I can say with confidence, it’s worth giving this recipe a try!

Ingredients

Beef Patties

  • 1.5 lbs Ground beef
  • 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 1 Egg
  • 2 Garlic cloves
  • 1 Small onion
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Mushroom Gravy

  • 1.5 cups Sliced mushrooms
  • 1 Onion
  • 1.5 cups Beef broth
  • 1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup Ketchup
  • 2 Tbsp Corn starch
  • 2 Tbsp Soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Sugar

Topping (Optional)

  • 4 Eggs

Instructions

Add the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper into a large bowl. Next, puree the onion and garlic in a blender. Then, add the onion and garlic mixture to the bowl with ground beef. Mix. Form patties that are about 4 inches wide and 1 inch thick. When forming the patties, slightly press down on the center of the patty to form a well, which will prevent the patties from bulging in the center as they cook.

Preheat a large skillet on medium heat. Place the patties in the skillet and cook for 7 minutes on each side. Be extra gentle when flipping the patties as they are very tender. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside while making the gravy. It is okay if the patties are not completely cooked through. The patties will be placed back in the skillet to finish cooking in the gravy.

Now, let’s get to work on the mushroom gravy. First, thinly slice the onion and the mushroom, and add them to the skillet. Cook the onion and mushroom slices for 3 minutes. Next, mix together a gravy of beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, corn starch, soy sauce, and sugar in a measuring cup or a bowl. Then, pour the gravy mixture into the skillet with the mushroom and onion. Gently stir to mix while scraping the bottom of the pan.

After stirring the gravy, add the patties back into the skillet and cook for an additional 10 minutes. The gravy will thicken and turn translucent as it cooks. Once the patties are cooked through and the mushroom and the onion in the gravy have softened, the Salisbury steak is ready!

Serve the Salisbury steak with a side of mashed potatoes or rice. If you would like to make this Salisbury steak extra special, top it with a fried egg!
